Did You Know?

A portion of YOUR registration fee from this race and our 4th of July 5K goes to the Redondo Beach Educational Foundation as well as other local schools and running programs. Meet The RBEF

“The Redondo Beach Educational Foundation was formed in 1991 by a group of concerned parents and community leaders. They realized that an excellent school system could not rely on state funding alone and set out on a mission to lift the level of education for all Redondo Beach students. With an all-volunteer staff, RBEF was able to increase annual funds raised each year. Poised to reach the million dollar mark in 2012, RBEF brought on its first staff member, Dr. Danielle Allphin, as a part-time Executive Director to assist the volunteer board and maximize the organization's growth and potential. In 2014 and in 2015, RBEF raised over a million dollars and is now assisted by its part-time Executive Director, Kristen Byard. RBEF continues to Raise the Tide with community-based fundraising that brings much-needed financial support to each Redondo Beach public school.

Our fundraising efforts have a deeper impact than many people realize. For the 2015-2016 school year, we will be giving approximately $850,000 to support the district in providing invaluable opportunities for students in science, music, arts, sports, math and college preparation. These funds will sustain programs that were implemented starting back in the 2011-12 school year, as well as for new programs for the changing curriculum, that continue to bring value to the educations of the Redondo Beach students. Children are born learners and thrive in an environment where they can connect with each other, their teachers, and their school communities and schools have the right resources for teaching and learning.” - excerpt from RBEF.org

Their Mission

“RBEF is rooted in the belief that the best opportunities come from creating the most well-rounded children, therefore providing the foundation and support for the whole child.

We are RBEF - the families of the children that will run the cities, the businesses, and the world one day and we are obligated and honored to provide them with the best, most creative, and well-rounded preparation and curriculum.

We are RBEF - the community surrounding our children and we know that when children are stronger, smarter, and reach for and achieve more, all of us do.

We are RBEF - the organization and we are here to provide critical support to our children so they can achieve all that we know they are capable of.

OUR KIDS. OUR COMMUNITY. OUR LEGACY.

After all, while it may be our hopes we are trying to fulfill in our children, it is truly their dreams RBEF seeks to fulfill.” - excerpt from RBEF.org

You can offer additional financial support by visiting the RBEF here.

Training For The #stpats5k

Meet Erik

We have a guest writer for this week’s newsletter! Erik Taylor, of Taylor's Fitness, is a local personal trainer in the South Bay and has a long history of running. You can check out more about him here: www.taylorsfitness.com. Read on to find out his helpful tips to train for the #stpats5k!

Keep It Simple

Let’s not make things harder than they need to be!  Training for a 5K should be simple, progressive and fun.  The beauty of a 5K is there isn’t a massive time commitment like there is with a half or full marathon.  There are plenty of runners that will step to the line on that Sunday that may only run 2 days a week and they will run well.

As you know, you will always increase your chances of success with proper training and having some patience during that first mile of the race.  So the goods news is you still have time on your side to get some quality training weeks under your belt before race day.

Here are tips to ensure that you have success:

1. You need to be logging in miles each week.  Whether it is just cruising around your neighborhood, hammering out hill repeats or spending some time on the oval doing intervals - you need to be running.  Think of running as a skill, running goes way beyond your cardiovascular system.  There is a flow to running that only runners know, the more you practice your skill the better you will get at getting into that rhythm.  Make getting in prescribed runs in each week a priority.

2. If you are after a great performance, your training has to be progressive.  You need to be running faster on your daily route or scheduled intervals or running longer on your long runs. This is where it helps to have a training partner or training group to run with, it’s always easier to push yourself when there are others doing it right alongside you.  Do not become a creature of habit and run the same workouts in the same times each week.  You have got to push yourself!  On the flip side, if you just want to go run and have fun, your training is less specific. Your goal is just to hit your weekly mileage.

3. Patience!!! You have to have patience when you are out there; too many people get caught up in the moment at the start of the race and go out way too hard.  These people will pay dearly at the end of the race.  Focus on being relaxed at the start and staying within your ability that first mile.

4. You need to strength train.  Strength training should supplement your running, not the other way around.  A little can go a long way - push-ups, chin-ups, shoulder presses, ab work and squats can help you be a more efficient runner and a more complete athlete.  Strength training workouts should be 20-40 minutes long and no more than 2 times a week if running is your primary focus. Remember you don’t need to belong to a gym to get a quality strength training session in - body weight exercises or suspension trainers are a great and quick way to knock out a workout.

5. If your goal is performance, you need to have a strategy in place for race day.  Have an idea of the mile splits you need to hit to reach your goal race time.  This is where technology can be your friend.  A GPS unit can help you stay on your target pace and will help increase your chances of reaching those goals you set.  Your other option is to find a racing partner that is trying to run around the same time as you.  Teamwork can go a long way - being accountable, pushing each other and a little cheerleading will only help.

6. Have fun!  Whether you want to set a personal record or just cross the finish line, it is a win.  You got out there and you competed!

The Life Of Chase Stecyk

Chase Stecyk Leprechaun Dash For Gold

The Redondo St. Patrick's Day 5K offers an opportunity for kids to participate in our community event with the Chase Stecyk Leprechaun Dash For Gold. Please read below the beautiful words that Chase's family has written about his amazing life.

About Chase

"He was the sweetest, happiest kid!  He LOVED to run, skateboard and climb trees and was a very helpful and kind soul.  At age 6 he had horrible leg pain, to the point he was in a fetal position for about a week.  I took him to every doctor you can imagine, but they couldn’t find anything wrong with him.  Finally, I thought maybe he has a pinched nerve, so I took him to a chiropractor.   The doctor said I needed to get him in the hospital immediately!!  By the time we got him to CHLA (Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles)  he was in so much pain he was barely coherent.  That night they diagnosed him with a rare spinal cord tumor.  (Myxopapillary Ependymoma)

Long story short, 7 surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy over a 5 year period.  The doctors just couldn’t stop it from coming back. On top of that the tumor metastasized to his lungs.  Our oncologist is world renowned top of his field in Pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors.  He said he has NEVER seen this type of tumor spread outside of the central nervous system!    The ironic thing also was the tumor was pressing on the nerves to his legs and he became paralyzed from the waist down.

The whole time he was sick, he never complained he just wanted to get better.   Sadly, in January of 2011, the doctors told us there was nothing more they could do.  My husband and I decided not to tell him as we didn’t want to scare or stress him out.   He got to celebrate his 11th birthday (March 16th) and he passed away April 4th 2011.  Before he passed he did say to us that he wasn’t afraid to die because he knew he was going to heaven.  The bravest boy I will ever know!!  His memorial service had to be held at Redondo Union High School as the whole community, including all his teachers, doctors and nurses from CHLA, friends, family and people that never even met him overflowed the auditorium.  Every one wore green as that was his favorite color.  It was such a touching sight to see the sea of green that day!

Since then we have had some really neat things happen in his honor.  Alta Vista Elementary had a memorial pergola and outdoor seating area built with a memorial plaque in Chase’s honor.  They also give out a spirit award every year to a 5th graded that “inspires” other kids to be kind and positive.  Some of the local businesses and many people in Redondo Beach pitched in and we were able to buy a “bladder scanner” and donate it to CHLA in Chase’s honor.  Also, one of my friends who is an events coordinator started the “Friends of Chase Golf Tournament” to raise money for a camp called “Dreamstreet”.

Chase got to go to this camp two times.  It is a camp for kids fighting life threatening illnesses www.dreamstreetfoundation.org the camp is so important to these kids!  It’s a place where they can feel “normal” for a week as they fight for their lives!  Chase loved this camp and since he has passed away, many of his friends and Chase’s brother Cole, volunteer to help that week.  He touched so many lives in such the short amount of time that he was on this earth."
